The memory tournament: Rory McIlroy takes a share of the lead

Rory McIlroy goes into the final round of the Memorial Tournament with a “great chance” of winning after a tenacious third round moved him into a share of the lead at six under.

The Northern Irishman’s two-under 70 on Saturday saw him climb six places in the rankings.

He leads with the American David Lipsky (72) and the South Korean Kim Si-woo (71).

“I have to stick to the game plan, not get too ahead of myself or be too aggressive,” McIlroy told Sky Sports.

McIlroy, 34, has focused on keeping the ball in play off the tee at the challenging Muirfield Village golf course in Ohio.

But he excelled on the greens in the third round, needing just 22 shots all day – the fewest of anyone in the field.

The world number three added: “I’m feeling more comfortable. I don’t think I’m 100%. I’m fighting and staying in there. The course is playing really hard and it’s all about where you are on the course.

“I feel better. I keep saying that, I feel like I’m not fighting the face of the club as much. I can release it a little more and just have a little more confidence in it. This week, with how hard he’s playing, he has to you trust it.”

McIlroy’s key moments saw him drive in from the green for birdie at the 12th and – after dropping a shot at 16 – fire an eight-iron from 178 yards to 10 feet and hole the 17th. .

American Lipsky has never won on the PGA Tour and although he still has a share of the lead, he dropped three shots in his final six holes on day three.

South Korean Kim wasn’t without hiccups either, posting double bogeys on holes 3 and 11, only to serve up six birdies to stay in contention.

American Justin Sue fell from his spot as the overnight leader to 14th place after dropping four shots in the first four holes of a five-over round.

And Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama – second overnight – was left to suffer a triple bogey on the 12th when he found water in a three-par round that saw him slip to ninth in the field.
