A top-flight match in Argentina was called off after a fan fell to his death from a stadium stand.

Primera Division leaders River Plate were playing against Defensa and Justicia at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires when the incident happened.

Referee Fernando Rapalini stopped the match while the police and fire brigade cordoned off the area.

River Plate officials said the fan “died at the scene” and an investigation is underway.

They also said the area would remain closed for 24 hours while evidence was gathered.

“The medical service immediately arrived at the scene of the incident, as did the police and various security services,” the club said in a statement.

“The Sivori Alta stand was at 90% capacity. At the time of the fall there was no third party intervention. It was also verified that there was no violent situation in or around the stands.”

The club later named the fan as Pablo Marcelo Serrano and said it was a “day of deep sadness”, while the league said it shared the “pain and suffering of family and friends”.
